About the design-showcase |
|
Welcome! We are very pleased that you have chosen to take part in our fifth annual gala celebration highlighting the design excellence of current and former NJ School of Architecture (NJSOA) students. Thank you for joining us.
Since its’ beginning, the NJ School of Architecture at NJIT has trained thousands of leading architects. These talented designers give shape to our world every day. They contribute specialized skills and knowledge to our region’s economic development. They also create new intellectual property and serve as indispensable advisors to industry and government. As you can see from the exhibited designs, NJSOA graduates and students shape and help build appealing, state-of-the-art schools and healthcare facilities, houses, museums, libraries, commercial properties and entire communities.
Under the direction of Dean Urs Gauchat, our students are taught to invent, to take risks, and to reexamine the building-delivery process. They are taught business and presentation skills useful to employers, as well as the best in technical and design skills. They learn an attitude as well - the importance of contributing to the civic good.
Many people have labored to make this exhibit a success. Alumni from the Dean’s Executive Council, along with leaders in the real estate profession on the Board of Visitors gave of their time and talents. The NJSOA staff has worked diligently. Our sponsors generously contributed funds to support the program, and to support scholarships at the school – funds that will enable ambitious, talented young people to develop their design skills.
As the NJ School of Architecture has grown to nearly 1,000 undergraduate and graduate students, we expect the Design Showcase will grow each year. Our students are gaining a national and international reputation for the excellence of their work. It’s clear from the submissions this year that this reputation is well deserved.
Thank you for taking part in this event. We hope that you will be inspired by the work of our alumni and students, and will benefit from strengthening your relationships with them. Enjoy the showcase!

Design-showcase FACT SHEET
WHO PARTICIPATES?
In 2009, more than 200 practicing architects from the NJ/NY area attended our third annual design showcase. These alumni of the New Jersey School of Architecture (NJSOA) at NJIT - from large and small firms, as well as from government agencies, builders, developers and real estate managers – joined our 850 current students and more than 100 industry suppliers and friends of the school.
This is the premier event where scores of vendors, developers and companies meet and market to the area’s top designers and architectural firms, and where architectural firms meet and recruit some of the area’s best student designers. Participants earn CEU credits and proceeds from the event support student scholarships at the school.
WHAT IS SHOWCASED?
The top current students at the school will exhibit 75 boards featuring their designs. We will also exhibit many designs submitted as part of the AIA Suburban Live The Box deign competition, and additional boards submitted by alumni. The event catalogue will feature information about each architect, their firm and submission, along with prominent recognition for sponsors. It will be kept as a reference work by participants and will be seen online by many more designers.
WHAT IS THE PROGRAM?
The event will be held in Weston Hall at NJIT in Newark, NJ from 5:00 pm – 9 pm on Thursday, April 15th. In addition to a formal exhibit of the design boards, it will feature:
· A gala reception where alumni, students and sponsors will network. · Sponsor table displays to promote their goods and services are available. Sponsors will strengthen relationships with clients and meet hundreds of new prospects. · Architects will have recruitment opportunities as students explain their boards and firms highlight their design expertise. · A CEU program featuring Bernard Tschumi, the Dean of the Graduate School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation at Columbia University from 1988 to 2003.
